Kanda Square Charcoal Starter

A Japanese-made square chimney starter from Kanda. Fill it with charcoal, light from underneath, and the chimney effect does the rest — no lighter fluid, no fanning, no standing over it.

If you are burning binchotan, a chimney starter is not optional. Binchotan is dense enough that lighting it in the open is genuinely difficult; in a chimney it is straightforward.

How To Use It:

1. Fill the chimney with charcoal.
2. Light from beneath with a firelighter or an open flame.
3. Wait until most of the charcoal has changed colour. With binchotan this takes patience — do not rush it.
4. Tip the lit charcoal carefully into the grill, using the handle.

Safety:
The body gets extremely hot. Always use the handle, always use a heatproof glove, and set it down on a non-flammable surface. Use it outdoors or with proper ventilation.
